Last year San Francisco's Trannywood Pictures released Cubbyholes, a new entry into the small genre of FTM erotica. This year, they return with Couch Surfers: Trans Men in Action, a continuation of the Cubbyholes formula—but with surprisingly different results.

Let me back up a bit: Trannywood is an outgrowth of Eros, the Center for Safe Sex in San Francisco (no relation to Eros Zine, Eros Guide or any of its affiliates). This is a collective of men who think gay sex is hot, regardless of whether the men fucking are bioboys or trannies, and who want to promote safer sex between men of all stripes. Cubbyholes was formed as an outgrowth of its safe sex mission—a way to show hot, safe FTM action including bioboys—as well as a creative outlet for the collective's members.

Cubbyholes was a charming flick, displaying the ground-level practices of FTMs involved in anonymous sex-club safe sex and as a result displaying a hardcore DIY esthetic. It's a worthy entry into the genre, but much of its charm comes from being unpolished. With Couch Surfers, the DIY esthetic is still there, but the filmmakers are definitely polishing up their act. Sure, it's still hardcore, ground-level, obviously made on the cheap and easy, but something in the production clicks here more completely than it did in Cubbyholes.

On about a dozen different levels, this is a more sophisticated flick than Cubbyholes, but also impressively hot. The dynamic between players is more intense; there seems to be more dirty talk; the camera's more dynamic; the action's lovingly visible; everybody seems to be having a hell of a good time.

The nasty flavors of dirty talk ("Yeah, you wanna suck my fuckin' cock?") doesn't distract from the extreme consensuality of all this stuff, which either works for you or doesn't—but if you're looking for a porn movie where the sex acts are seamlessly negotiated, you're set. This is what we in the sex ed field used to call a "modeling film" back in the '70s—it shows how eminently safe behaviors can be incorporated into otherwise edgy and filthy sex. When things get going, the fucking is sweaty, sleazy, stinky, nasty, and hot, and doesn't slow down a bit when someone says "can I fuck you from behind" rather than just doing it, the way they do in more typical porno.

Much, much more importantly, though, the action is remarkably hot, hotter than it ever got in Cubbyholes. I think you can chalk that up to a few things. First, the filmmakers are clearly more experienced, able to provide better angles and cleaner camerawork in general, including a more powerful editing dynamic. Second, the soundtrack's a rollicking dose of gay-porn electronica—let's face it, when my ears tell me this is fagporn, my brain and my dick believes it, and the sleazy, predictable club beats are exactly what someone watching gay porn expect to get him (or her) going.

Then there's the most important thing—the performers seem utterly comfortable, happily fucking on camera. The scripted lines are at times delivered awkwardly—hey, these aren't actors—but when it comes time to fuck, these guys know how to do it.

Couch Surfers shows the best possibilities of community-oriented porn; it's nasty, fun, good-natured and hot. You can get it, and Cubbyholes, at www.babeland.com, Smitten Kitten, and via other retailers listed at TrannyWoodPictures.com.
